…says Makinde’s comments reckless, inciting violence
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Nigeria’s opposition leaders of attempting to mask their collapse with alarmist narratives noting that they are victims of self-inflicted injuries.
In a statement released on Sunday by the National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party asserted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have been undermined by poor leadership, a disregard for the rule of law, and the dissonant presidential ambitions of figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, rather than any external pressure from the government.
The party insisted that Nigeria’s democratic space remains robust with nearly two dozen active parties, suggesting that the opposition’s recent threats of violence are merely an admission of incompetence and a preemptive excuse for an anticipated defeat at the polls in 2027.
Addressing the state of the opposition, the APC argued that the PDP was fractured by the violation of its own zoning formula, while the Labour Party was subverted by the nomadic political disposition of its leadership.
The ruling party rejected any expectation that it should assist the opposition in managing its internal affairs, stating that it has no duty to provide leadership consulting services to confused political rivals.
Instead, the APC vowed to continue its own mobilization and planning for the 2027 general elections without yielding to what it described as blackmail or gangster antics.
The ruling party also accused the Oyo state Governor,Engr.Seyi Makinde of inciting violence over his recent Operation Wetie comments at the opposition summit held over the weekend in Ibadan.
The APC categorized Makinde’s remarks as a clear and present threat to national security, arguing that it is particularly disturbing for a sitting governor and Chief Security Officer to conjure up such dark episodes of political carnage to threaten the federal government and the Nigerian people.
The ruling party called on national security and intelligence agencies to take the development seriously and act to safeguard the country’s democratic order.
They argued that Governor Makinde constitutional immunity from prosecution does not equate to immunity from accountability regarding actions that endanger national safety.
The statement further emphasized that no individual, regardless of their political standing, should be allowed to upend hard-won democratic governance under the guise of political commentary or fear-mongering.
The APC maintained that while the opposition fails to articulate alternative policy visions, the government will remain focused on upholding the rule of law and the prosperity of all Nigerians.
