The Presidency has suggested that a more proactive and informed stance from the United Kingdom during global debates on alleged religious persecution in Nigeria could have significantly de-escalated international tensions.

Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Communication, argued that Britain’s silence or distance during such contentious moments often allows speculation to overshadow the complex realities of Nigeria’s social landscape.

Speaking via his official X platform ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled visit to London this Tuesday, Dare emphasized that the UK possesses deep-seated institutional knowledge of Nigeria.

He noted that as a long-standing partner with intricate political and economic ties, Britain is uniquely positioned to provide the balanced perspective necessary to correct skewed international perceptions.

The Presidential aide observed that while the two nations share history, London has at times appeared detached when controversial narratives about Nigeria emerge in global discourse.

He called for a renewed partnership that moves beyond surface-level trade figures and routine diplomacy, advocating instead for a relationship defined by frank engagement and strategic alignment on sensitive domestic issues.

“When President Tinubu arrives in London, he is not simply visiting a former colonial capital. He is engaging a nation whose financial markets, diaspora networks, and security institutions remain deeply intertwined with Nigeria’s trajectory,” Dare stated.

Drawing a parallel to Nigeria’s recent diplomatic outreach to Türkiye, Dare described Britain as a vital gateway into global financial and technological systems.

He asserted that the upcoming visit offers a critical opportunity to reset Nigeria-Britain ties, transforming a bridge built by history into a highway to the future.

The Presidency maintains that a robust, modernized strategic relationship will better serve mutual interests and ensure that diplomatic cooperation keeps pace with the evolving challenges of the 21st century.
