Two killed in Abeokuta road crash

Two people were killed on Monday evening in a fatal road crash involving a Lexus car and a commercial motorcycle at Leme, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) stated that the accident occurred at about 5:45 p.m., involving a black Lexus car with registration number KJA 398 JR and a black TVS motorcycle with registration number AYT 837 QU.

In a statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SRC Afolabi Odunsi, said FRSC rescue operatives received a distress call at 5:50 p.m. and arrived at the scene within five minutes to commence operations.

According to the statement, six adult males were involved in the crash; two lost their lives, while the remaining four escaped unhurt.

The FRSC attributed the fatal accident to excessive speeding, describing speed violations as a leading cause of road crashes and avoidable deaths on Nigerian highways.

The corps noted that its rescue team evacuated the victims, deposited the remains of the deceased at the State Hospital Mortuary in Ijaye, recovered personal belongings including an identity card and a Tecno mobile phone and cleared the obstruction to restore the free flow of traffic.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, CC Oludare Ogunjobi, commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged motorists and motorcyclists to adhere strictly to speed limits and traffic regulations.

He warned that speeding significantly reduces a driver’s reaction time and increases the impact of crashes, stressing that road users must make safety their top priority.

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to reducing road crashes through the continuous enforcement of traffic laws, public enlightenment campaigns, and prompt emergency rescue services across the state.
