Tinubu lauds Google CEO for advancing Nigeria’s digital transformation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Sundar Pichai, the Chief Executive Officer of Google, for the company’s strong interest in advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital transformation in Nigeria.

This was disclosed following a productive meeting between President Tinubu and the Google team in Paris, which took place on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

The President was joined at the meeting by Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy.

This announcement was contained in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy.

The statement revealed that the discussions focused on fostering a strategic partnership to accelerate Nigeria’s journey toward AI and digital transformation.

The collaboration seeks to position Nigeria as a leading technology and innovation hub in Africa, leveraging AI, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure to stimulate economic growth and enhance global competitiveness.

Initiatives under consideration include expanding digital infrastructure, equipping the workforce with the digital skills required for future growth, and encouraging the adoption of AI-driven research and cloud computing across industries.

Speaking on the engagement, President Tinubu stated, “This partnership aligns seamlessly with my administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focused on economic diversification through industrialisation, technology, and innovation.”

He emphasised that the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy would provide strategic oversight, while the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) would coordinate efforts alongside the private sector to ensure impactful outcomes.

In his remarks, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation.

“Nigeria has an incredible opportunity to lead in AI and digital innovation in Africa. Google is excited to continue working with the Nigerian government to create an ecosystem that fosters innovation and economic growth,” Pichai said.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, who also participated in the talks, highlighted the partnership’s potential to significantly accelerate Nigeria’s technological advancement and strengthen its digital economy.

He added, “Nigeria remains committed to ensuring that AI and digital transformation create tangible benefits for businesses and citizens across the country.”

President Tinubu also acknowledged Nigeria’s growing potential as a technology destination, pledging to foster a conducive environment for strategic investments from leading tech companies.

He further appreciated Google’s ongoing contributions to Nigeria’s digital transformation, noting that the collaboration will open new opportunities for businesses and young talents across the nation.
