President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has celebrated renowned constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, on his 75th birthday, praising him as a fearless defender of democracy and civil liberties who stood firm against military dictatorship.

In a statement on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the Chairman of Human Rights Africa for his “outstanding contributions to democracy, justice and the rule of law.”

Tinubu described Abayomi, who also serves as Pro Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, as “a man of integrity” whose sacrifices during Nigeria’s military era ensured that “the voice of the people was never silenced.”

“Dr. Abayomi remains a consistent voice defending democratic rights. In the dark days of military regimes in our country, he remained a thorn in the flesh of power usurpers, sacrificing his freedom to advocate for the enthronement of people’s power,” the President said.

He lauded Abayomi’s relentless defence of the downtrodden and his insistence that “every Nigerian deserves to speak and be heard.”

The President wished the rights activist good health and strength, adding that Nigeria continues to tread the path of progress he long envisioned.
