Three teenagers have died after drowning in a river near a mining site in Jinkiri Village, Tirwun Ward, Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The victims 16-year-olds Habibu Mohammed and Abubakar Mohammed, and 14-year-old Zailani Sule—were all residents of Durum Village. According to police investigations, the boys had been involved in mining activities before deciding to swim in the nearby river, where the tragic incident occurred.

Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, stating that it happened around 1:00 p.m. Despite efforts to secure medical help, the teenagers were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Wakil said that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The remains of the victims were examined at the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi before being released to their families for burial.

“In light of this heartbreaking situation, the Nigeria Police Force, Bauchi State Command under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expresses its deepest condolences to the affected families,” Wakil stated.

He also emphasized the importance of community awareness and warned against swimming or engaging in water-related activities, especially during the rainy season.

The police command reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
