Tenaris completes Bonga North coating campaign in Nigeria

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has said Tenaris Global Services Nigeria Ltd has completed the coating campaign for the Bonga North deepwater project, describing the development as evidence of sustained private investment in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.

Lokpobiri made the disclosure while highlighting the company’s 25 years of operations in Nigeria, noting that its investments in local capabilities had contributed to job creation, skills development, and stronger domestic supply chains.

The Minister said the completion of the Bonga North coating campaign, alongside the commissioning of Tenaris’ upgraded five-layer thermal insulation plant, demonstrated the importance of industrial investment and strategic partnerships to the development of Nigeria’s petroleum sector.

He also encouraged deeper collaboration, training, and supplier development to ensure that the country’s oil and gas industry remains competitive and capable of meeting the demands of the evolving energy sector.

The Minister’s comments followed an announcement by Tenaris on October 2 that it had successfully completed the coating campaign for the Bonga North deepwater project, located in waters exceeding 1,000 meters off the Nigerian coast.

According to Tenaris, the campaign was delivered on an accelerated schedule and required advanced technical capabilities.

The company also announced the inauguration of its upgraded thermal insulation plant in Onne, Rivers State, following an investment of approximately $10 million to completely refurbish its five-layer thermal insulation line.

Tenaris said the investment was made to bring advanced coating technologies closer to its customers and strengthen Nigeria’s industrial capabilities.

The company stated that its 25 years of operations in Nigeria had seen it support some of the country’s complex energy developments while continuing to invest in local capabilities.

The Bonga North development is a deepwater subsea tie-back to the existing Bonga floating production, storage, and offloading vessel operated by Shell. The project is expected to involve the drilling and completion of 16 wells and has an estimated peak production of 110,000 barrels of oil per day.

The overall Bonga North project is still under development, with first oil expected by the end of the decade. The recently completed milestone therefore relates specifically to Tenaris’ coating campaign for the project, rather than the completion of the entire Bonga North development.
