Following a constructive engagement with the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced the cancellation of its planned protest set for 14 January 2026.
The dialogue brought together NANS leadership from tertiary institutions across the country and focused on the objectives and benefits of the government’s fiscal reforms.
The Committee highlighted how the reforms aim to reduce the tax burden on average Nigerians and remove barriers to opportunities in sectors such as business process outsourcing (BPO) and other emerging fields.
In a statement issued after the engagement, the Committee said the discussion clarified widespread misconceptions about the reforms, stressing that they are not designed to target the poor but to create relief and opportunities for young Nigerians.
The statement reads: “The students commended the thoughtfulness of the reforms and welcomed the clarity provided.
“Following the engagement, they resolved to call off their planned protest and instead collaborate with the government to sensitise students and other citizens nationwide.”
The Committee added that the outcome demonstrated that constructive dialogue and collaboration, not confrontation, lead to meaningful solutions.
