Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has called on Nigerian youths to move away from a culture of constant complaints and instead take advantage of the opportunities available to them as platforms for success.

Speaking during an interactive session with the “Class 2025 Scholars” of the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ikeja, the governor encouraged the younger generation to pursue their ambitions with clarity, determination, and resilience.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu stated that genuine success is earned through discipline, continuous learning, and a strong sense of purpose.

“Success comes from focusing on the right values, remaining consistent, and having a clear understanding of your life’s purpose. There are no shortcuts. You must commit to developing yourself to stand out in whatever career path you choose,” he said.

The governor advised youths to invest in personal growth, acquire relevant knowledge, and seek guidance from mentors who can help shape their future.

“Education goes beyond earning a certificate. It is about acquiring practical knowledge and useful information that enable you to contribute productively to society. Nigerians must not be known as a nation of complainers, but rather as people who spot opportunities and maximise them,” he remarked.

In her remarks, the Vice Chair of NHEF, Dr Ifeoma Nwokorie, stated that the scholars’ visit to Lagos was part of efforts to observe how governance and policy impact youth development in practice.

She commended the Lagos State Government for its commitment to empowering young people through initiatives such as the Lateef Jakande Academy, noting that such programmes reflect NHEF’s mission to develop globally competitive leaders.

“The Nigeria Higher Education Foundation was founded in 2004 by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to underscore the essential role of higher education in preparing young Nigerians to become impactful professionals. We commend the Lagos State Government for its sustained investment in youth empowerment,” Nwokorie said.

She described the engagement as both “enlightening and motivating,” and called for stronger collaboration between public institutions and educational foundations to build a more secure future for Nigeria.
