Stock market hits ₦4.19trn in first-half 2025 trades, nearly double previous year

Total equities transactions on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) reached ₦4.19 trillion in the first half of 2025, almost double the ₦2.60 trillion recorded during the same period in 2024.
A breakdown of the figures shows that total equities traded in January 2025 stood at ₦607.05 billion. February recorded ₦509.47 billion, while March saw a surge to an all-time monthly high of ₦1.115 trillion.
April’s trading value moderated to ₦482.04 billion, rising again to ₦700.50 billion in May and ₦778.65 billion in June.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) accounted for ₦1.135 trillion of the total transactions in the six-month period, representing 27.08 per cent of overall trades, up from ₦540.48 billion in the first half of 2024. Domestic investors traded ₦3.057 trillion, or 72.92 per cent of the total, compared with ₦2.063 trillion in the corresponding period last year.
Foreign inflows into Nigerian equities reached ₦559.25 billion in H1 2025, with outflows of ₦576.09 billion. This marked a substantial increase from H1 2024, when inflows were ₦229.07 billion and outflows ₦311.41 billion.
Domestic retail investors traded equities worth ₦1.472 trillion in the period under review, while domestic institutional investors accounted for ₦1.585 trillion. This compares with ₦999.21 billion and ₦1.064 trillion, respectively, in the first half of 2024.
The NGX report for the period ended 30 June 2025 indicates that month-on-month total transactions rose by 11.15 per cent, from ₦700.50 billion (about $441.64 million) in May 2025 to ₦778.65 billion (about $509.02 million) in June 2025.
Compared with June 2024, when trades were valued at ₦354.55 billion, total transactions in June 2025 surged by 119.62 per cent. Domestic investors led the month’s performance, with their trades surpassing those of foreign investors by about 64 per cent.
The NGX report also shows domestic transactions rising by 9.93 per cent month-on-month, from ₦581.59 billion in May 2025 to ₦639.34 billion in June 2025. Foreign transactions grew by 17.16 per cent within the same period, increasing from ₦118.91 billion (about $74.97 million) to ₦139.31 billion (about $91.07 million).
Institutional investors outperformed retail investors by 14 per cent in June 2025. While retail transactions fell by 18.62 per cent from ₦337.46 billion in May to ₦274.63 billion in June, institutional trades climbed by 49.39 per cent, rising from ₦244.13 billion in May to ₦364.71 billion in June.
