Speakership controversy: Obasa remains absent, as Meranda moves into Speaker’s office

By Sodiq Adelakun

The Lagos State House of Assembly experienced a significant change in leadership on Monday as Mojisola Meranda officially assumed office as the new Speaker, receiving a warm welcome and strong support from her fellow lawmakers.

Meranda’s arrival at the Assembly complex was accompanied by several members, signalling unity and solidarity with the new leadership.

This change followed the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on January 13. Despite this, Obasa had described his removal as unconstitutional on Saturday, claiming to still hold the office.

However, in spite of his insistence on remaining Speaker, Obasa was noticeably absent from the Assembly on Monday, amid tight security measures put in place to prevent any disruption or breakdown of order.

Meranda’s assumption of office was marked by a warm reception from her colleagues, who had since embraced her leadership and rallied around her. Lawmakers were seen accompanying her to her office, signalling a collective endorsement of her new role.

The absence of Obasa, who had promised to resume duties on Monday, has raised speculation about his next move.

Our correspondent observed that the atmosphere at the Assembly on Monday reflected the lawmakers’ commitment to supporting Meranda in ensuring stability and effectively carrying out legislative duties in the wake of the leadership change.
