The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the defamation case against Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, and his platform to November 20, following delays over unresolved applications.
At Thursday’s sitting, prosecuting counsel, Mr E.A. Inegbenoise, told the court that the matter was slated for arraignment but could not proceed because the defendants had filed a motion challenging the charges. He explained that although he had filed a counter-response, his reply was only served on the defence in court.
Defence counsel, Mr Tope Temokun, confirmed receipt but requested more time to respond, after which both parties agreed to return on November 20 to argue all outstanding motions.
Also present was Mr Marshal Abubakar, who represented Sahara Reporters Incorporated, noting his appearance “in protest” without giving further details. Mr Hamza Dantani appeared for the Nigerian Bar Association’s Citizens Liberties Committee.
Presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, subsequently adjourned the matter by consent of both parties.
The charges, filed in August, stem from Sahara Reporters’ publications on an alleged police promotion scandal and Sowore’s involvement in protests by retired officers demanding pension reforms.
