Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, has regained his freedom from police custody after spending several days in detention.
Sowore was released alongside Mr. Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu; Prince Kanu, the IPOB leader’s brother; and ten others. They were granted bail after meeting their conditions, which included a ₦500,000 bond each and two sureties in like sum.
Their arrest followed allegations of violating a court order restricting #FreeNnamdiKanu protesters from marching through certain areas within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Confirming the development, legal practitioner Mr. Tope Temokun said Sowore’s release came after what he described as “an unlawful rearrest” by operatives of the FCT Command while his bail was being perfected at the Kuje Magistrate Court.
Temokun said: “We are pleased to announce that Mr. Sowore has regained his freedom from prison custody today. “This comes after he was forcibly seized from the court premises and taken to prison in a clear attempt to frustrate his lawful release and subvert due process.
“The struggle is not over. The charges remain in court, and we will continue to confront them with the full force of law and truth. Nigeria must never become a country where our voice becomes our crime.”
