It was a life-changing moment for Mr. Solanke Francis Taiwo on Monday as he emerged the Overall Best Teacher in Nigeria, walking away with a staggering cash prize of ₦50 million.
The atmosphere at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, was electric as the Federal Government moved beyond rhetoric to practically reward excellence in the teaching profession during the maiden National Teachers’ Summit.
Solanke was not the only educator to leave the Villa with a transformed fortune. In a rare and massive display of appreciation for the often-overlooked profession, 12 other exemplary teachers were instantly elevated to millionaire status.
The government disbursed ₦25 million each to six teachers drawn from the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and six secondary school teachers, meticulously selected to represent the six geopolitical zones of the country.
The multimillion-naira rewards served as the highlight of the summit, which was convened by the Federal Ministry of Education to review the sector and launch Edu Revamp, a platform designed to enhance teacher capacity and equip them with 21st-century digital skills.
The cash awards were presented in recognition of the teachers’ outstanding service and dedication to molding the nation’s future leaders despite systemic challenges.
Witnessing the emotional event while standing in for the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, described the awards as a morale booster that would resonate across every classroom in Nigeria.
He commended the Federal Government for taking concrete steps to restore dignity to the teaching profession, noting that such recognition, paired with strategic investments like the Student Loan Scheme (NELFUND) and salary reviews, signals a clear policy direction aimed at revitalizing the sector.
Governor Zulum also lauded the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for hosting the summit at the State House, stating that her direct involvement and sustained advocacy for education particularly for the girl-child demonstrate that the welfare of teachers is now a priority at the highest level of governance.
He praised the Ministers of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa and Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, for driving reforms that translate into tangible benefits for the educators on the frontlines.
