SOKAPU accuses Umahi of threats over Mary Habila death suit

The Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), has accused the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, of threatening its National President, Engineer Tabara Samuel Kato, over a lawsuit filed on the death of nurse Mary Habila.

SOKAPU disclosed this during a live broadcast by Sahara Reporters on Wednesday, alleging that the minister called the union leader on Tuesday , July 28, 2026.

According to the union, the call came hours after Engineer Kato granted a television interview on the incident that occurred at the minister’s Abuja residence on June 27, 2026.

SOKAPU quoted the minister as saying: “I saw your suit against me. You need money, right? I will teach you a lesson of your life… I will give you ten lawsuits. People are asking for money, and there you are, taking me to court. I will deal with you,” before ending the call.

The union said the legal action was to seek truth and accountability in the death of Mary Habila.

“Our decision to seek judicial intervention is entirely within the bounds of the Nigerian constitution and is meant to protect the dignity and rights of our people,” SOKAPU stated.

It condemned what it described as abuse of office and intimidation, vowing not to withdraw the suit.

“Threats, abuse of power, or aggressive language from public office holders will not stop us from demanding accountability and justice for Mary Habila,” the union added.
