The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday confirmed three nominees as non-career ambassadors, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to bolstering diplomatic relations worldwide.
The confirmed ambassadors are Kayode Are from Ogun State, Aminu Dalhatu from Jigawa State, and Emmanuel Oke from Oyo State.
Their confirmations followed the presentation and adoption of the report by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which reviewed their qualifications and credentials.
Presenting the report, Senator Sani Bello, Chairman of the Committee, lauded the nominees for demonstrating extensive knowledge and practical understanding of international diplomacy.
In response, Senate President Godswill Akpabio thanked the committee for its swift consideration, while congratulating President Bola Tinubu for submitting what he described as “square pegs for square holes.”
Akpabio urged the new ambassadors to leverage their appointments to strengthen Nigeria’s relationships with the countries where they will be posted.
President Tinubu had forwarded the names of the three non-career ambassadorial nominees to the Senate on 26 November.
Currently, 65 other ambassadorial nominees, also screened, are awaiting confirmation.
In a related development, the Senate confirmed two commissioners for the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC): Aisha Kanti Bello and Dr Animashaun Olayinka, signalling a continued effort to enhance governance and oversight in the energy sector.
The confirmations come at a time when Nigeria seeks to expand its diplomatic footprint and improve electricity regulation, both crucial for national growth and international engagement.
