…commend Tinubu, Governors for N3bn donation to Kano fire victims
The Nigerian Senate, during an emergency plenary session on Tuesday has called for a fundamental restructuring of national security operations, advocating for the deployment of drones and advanced technological tools to combat rising insurgency.
This resolution followed an intense debate on the recent terrorist attacks in the Konkoso district of Niger State, which claimed over 65 lives and resulted in the abduction of numerous women and children.
Alongside this call for tech-driven surveillance, the Red Chamber emphasized the urgent need for enhanced inter-agency intelligence sharing to dismantle violent criminal networks across the country.
In a session marked by significant legislative and humanitarian updates, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin officially briefed the assembly on the devastating fire that recently razed the Singa market in Kano.
Describing the hub as a critical engine for Northern Nigeria’s economy, Jibrin highlighted the destruction of over 1,000 businesses and the subsequent loss of billions of naira.
In response, the Senate formally commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his N5 billion intervention and the Progressive Governors Forum for their N3 billion donation, while mandating the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide further immediate relief to the displaced traders.
On the legislative front, the Senate successfully passed the 2022 Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill following its recommittal to the Committee of the Whole via a motion of rescission.
The day’s proceedings concluded with the receipt of two executive communications from President Tinubu seeking the confirmation of Retired Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq as a National Commissioner for INEC and Ambassador Ismail Yusuf as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
Both nominees were referred to their respective committees for screening.
