Security heads must render accounts of security failures in the general election – HURIWA

Published

on

CIVIL rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA), on Tuesday, listed alleged victims of political violence and killings in Ebonyi State perpetrated during the administration of Governor Dave Umahi, especially before, during and after the 2023 general elections.

HURIWA said that the heads of the security institutions such as the NSA, Nigerian Police Force, Army, National Civil Defense, immigration and the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRRSC) amongst others should be tasked by the National Assembly as soon as possible to make open the personnel audits of their personnel deployed for the February 25th presidential election and the national legislative assembly elections and the gubernatorial poll of March 18th 2023. The Rights group said there was no justification for the gross abdication of their pre- election and election security duties that was witnessed massively in Ebonyi, Lagos and Rivers State and not forgetting Kano State. But HURIWA said the horrific and horrendous crimes against humanity that occurred during the elections in Ebonyi State have already been captured in a detailed report that HURIWA will despatch to the international Criminal Court in The Hague Netherlands.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, asked the international community to probe the political killings and violence and slam extreme sanctions on the perpetrators. HURIWA also wants the International community to slam travel ban on Governor Umahi unless and until he can prove that the killers of these citizens have been arrested and handed over to an unbiased judicial forum for prosecution for murder. It argued that most of these suspicious deaths were politically motivated which is why HURIWA will be writing Amnesty International to also conduct her own separate independent investigation on the alleged executions.

The group said its research team led by a professor of criminology had just returned from Ebonyi where they gathered eyewitness accounts. HURIWA demanded that the commissioner of police in Ebonyi, the state director of the Department of State Services and other relevant military commanders based in Ebonyi who could have stopped these killings but failed should similarly be charged.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “The political intolerance in Ebonyi during Governor Dave Umahi and his All Progressives Congress party reached a crescendo in the buildup to the 2-23 general elections and this was responsible for the withdrawal of our support for Umahi’s Senate Presidency ambition.

“Already, we have drawn up a list of citizens killed before, during and after the 2023 poll in Ebonyi State under the current dispensation and we are asking the USA, UK, AUSTRALIA, Canada, EU and the ICC to ask President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate and those responsible and to prosecute them either in Nigeria or in ICC for crimes against humanity. We are not saying Governor Umahi did the killings but as the Chief security officer of Ebonyi State he is legally obliged to render absolute accounts of all these unwarranted killings during his 8 years regime.

Stop using repressive laws to intimidate journalists – SERAP, NGE tell FG

Published

on

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, and Nigeria Guild of Editors, NGE, have called on Nigerian authorities at all levels of government to stop using repressive and anti-media laws to target, intimidate and harass journalists, critics and media houses.

The groups made the demand after an interactive session on ‘the state of press freedom in Nigeria’ held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ikeja.

In a joint statement, SERAP and NGE said that, “the government of President Bola Tinubu, the country’s 36 governors and FCT minister must now genuinely uphold press freedom, ensure access to information to all Nigerians, obey court judgments, and respect the rule of law”.

They expressed concerns about the escalating crackdown on the right to freedom of expression and media freedom and the flagrant disregard for the rule of law by authorities at all levels of government.

The groups note that the suppression of the press in recent times takes various forms ranging from extrajudicial to unlawful detentions, disappearances, malicious prosecutions and wrongful use of both legislation and law enforcement.

The statement read in part: “We would continue to speak truth to power and to hold authorities to account for their constitutional and international obligations including on freedom of expression and media freedom.

“Nigeria as a country has a long and unpleasant history of press gagging and clampdown on media freedom, which is evidence of extensive state censorship of media and in some cases, the utter control of state-owned media houses.

“This position has not changed considerably despite almost 25 years of unbroken democratic rule in the Fourth Republic.”
