Sanwo Olu seeks stronger collaboration to curb flooding in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo Olu, has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to build flood-resilient communities and protect lives and livelihoods as the state grapples with increasing climate related challenges.

Speaking at the 2025 World Habitat Day celebration held on Monday at the Blue Roof, Lagos Television, Agidingbi, Ikeja, and themed “Urban Crisis Response: Flooding in Focus,” the governor represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Bimbola Salu Hundeyin said the theme aptly reflects the realities of Lagos as a coastal megacity vulnerable to flooding and climate change.

Sanwo Olu emphasised that tackling flooding requires long term urban planning, sustainable investments, and active community participation. He reaffirmed that urban resilience remains central to his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S.+ Agenda, with the Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO) spearheading projects to mitigate flood risks.

The governor urged private investors, development partners, and innovators to collaborate with the state on initiatives such as climate adaptation, mangrove restoration, and flood management, citing the Dangote Group as an example of effective partnership in environmental sustainability.

“Investing in flood resilient housing, smart drainage systems, renewable energy, and urban risk insurance will not only protect communities but also create new opportunities for growth,” he stated.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, described flooding as a recurring urban challenge that requires proactive governance, strict enforcement of planning laws, and integration of climate strategies into development projects.

He lauded Sanwo Olu’s efforts in infrastructure renewal, flood control, and affordable housing, while Permanent Secretary, Mr. Oluwole Sotire, assured that the state government would deepen collaborations to achieve a sustainable and flood-resilient Lagos.

The event also featured expert lectures, exhibitions, and youth debates on innovative housing and flood management solutions, with goodwill messages from Dr. Olajide Babatunde, Mr. Hakeem Badejo, and Mr. Dele Akindele.
