Demolished tradefair buildings possessed no valid approval – Lagos Gov't replies Obi

The Lagos State Government has dismissed former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s criticism of the recent demolition of structures at the Trade Fair Complex, insisting that the affected buildings had no valid approvals.

Obi, who visited the site earlier in the week, had described the exercise as “a test of impunity, justice and compassion,” suggesting that the demolished structures were properly approved. He also commended traders for their composure despite the losses.

Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described Obi’s remarks as “emotional theatrics” meant to mislead the public. He stressed that none of the demolished structures had approval from the Lagos State Government.

Omotoso explained that a general amnesty was granted in 2023 for owners of unapproved structures, with several extensions given to regularise them, but the affected property owners at the Trade Fair Complex failed to comply. He also revealed that officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning were once denied access to the complex and attacked before police intervention ensured their safety.

Clarifying jurisdiction, Omotoso said the Trade Fair Complex Board, established by the Federal Government, could only manage leases and commercial activities, not issue building approvals. He cited the Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning Act (1992), as domesticated in Lagos and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2003, which requires state government approval for all physical development.

The commissioner stressed that while the government sympathises with traders, illegal structures cannot be legitimised. “We must choose whether we wish to live in a society governed by law or one driven by political emotions,” he stated.

The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development carried out the enforcement along Lagos Badagry Expressway last Thursday, demolishing more than 19 unauthorised buildings despite repeated warnings and amnesty extensions.
