The Rivers State House of Assembly has said the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu is progressing in line with constitutional provisions, dismissing claims that the process has been halted or discontinued.
The Assembly made this known in a press statement issued on Friday, 9 January 2026, and signed by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Dr Enemi Alabo George.
According to the statement, the impeachment process, which commenced on Thursday, 8 January 2026, followed the provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
It disclosed that the Speaker of the House has formally forwarded the two notices of allegations of gross misconduct to both the governor and his deputy, while awaiting their responses.
The Assembly maintained that it was acting within its constitutional mandate. The statement reads in part:
“It is the House of Assembly that is empowered by the Constitution to stand by the people and stop infractions on the Constitution by the Governor, Deputy Governor or any other officer of the Rivers State Government.”
Reacting to reports suggesting that the impeachment process had been suspended, the lawmakers described such claims as deliberate misinformation aimed at misleading the public and creating disaffection.
The House said it would not be deterred by what it described as “cheap blackmail or threats,” insisting that it remains resolute in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
“We remain committed to our constitutional duties and would not be dissuaded by cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not mean well for our country’s nascent democracy,” the statement added.
The Assembly also expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their prayers and support, while extending gratitude to stakeholders and leaders across the country who, it said, believe in the Nigerian democratic project.
