Reps fulfil pledge, donate N705m to Tinubu as aid for vulnerable Nigerians

The leadership of the House of Representatives has contributed ¦ 705 million to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s humanitarian initiatives, aimed at assisting vulnerable Nigerians.

On 18th July 2024, the House had resolved to deduct 50% of their salaries for six months to help alleviate the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians, following the adoption of a motion during a plenary session.

The donation, presented as a symbolic cheque to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, comes amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges, including rising inflation and widespread poverty.

During the presentation, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas explained the House’s decision, stating: “We, in the House, took it upon ourselves to make a meaningful contribution that reflects our deep concern for all Nigerians.

“We share in the difficulties they are facing, and that is why, from July 2024 to December 2024, we will forgo 50% of our basic salaries. This is a symbolic act from the House to demonstrate to you and the nation that we genuinely understand the hardships of the people.”

The total donation of N705 million represents the collective six-month salary sacrifice of the lawmakers.

Abbas stressed that this gesture symbolises solidarity, compassion, and shared responsibility in light of Nigeria’s current difficulties.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima commended President Tinubu’s leadership, asserting that under his direction, Nigeria is on a path to sustainable development.

“The President has demonstrated strong leadership, generosity, and the ability to unite people. I commend the Speaker and the leadership of the House for maintaining stability—there can be no development without peace, and there can be no peace without development.

“The harmony within the House is a positive sign, and this donation is a powerful message that we are all working towards a common goal,” he added.
