Former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, has revealed that much of his time and that of former Senate President Bukola Saraki was spent navigating legal battles, noting that political opposition often comes with a heavy price.

Sani made the remarks on Tuesday via his verified social media handle while reflecting on his experiences in Nigerian politics and drawing comparisons with international developments involving prominent figures, including former United States President Donald Trump.

He observed that individuals who challenge the status quo or fall out of favor with those in power frequently encounter severe legal and political consequences.

He described these experiences as part of the harsh realities of political life, recalling periods during his tenure when he moved constantly between different courts over civil and criminal matters, a reflection of the pressures often associated with public service in the opposition.

The former lawmaker specifically referenced Bukola Saraki, highlighting the relentless legal challenges that defined Saraki’s political journey, alongside other actors who faced similar circumstances.

Expanding his reflection beyond Nigeria, Sani stressed that the challenges associated with opposition politics are not unique to the country, noting that even global figures like Trump have faced criminal charges before staging political comebacks.

According to Sani, these developments demonstrate that political pressure, legal scrutiny, and power struggles are recurring features of democratic systems worldwide rather than isolated national occurrences.

He maintained that political engagement carries both privilege and risk, warning that aspiring politicians must be mentally prepared for what he described as the price of opposition.

Sani added that contemporary political and legal struggles are not new, but are part of a long-standing pattern that has repeated across different political eras and jurisdictions.

Although he did not mention specific local names in his post, political observers have linked his remarks to ongoing national conversations regarding high-profile legal proceedings involving the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.

The former governor was recently granted bail of ₦200 million by the Federal High Court in Kaduna under stringent conditions. Meanwhile, the Kaduna State High Court on Tuesday adjourned the ruling on his separate bail application until June, a development that continues to generate significant public debate.

Sani, who has previously advised political office holders to remain cautious in the exercise of power, reiterated that public office is temporary and that accountability is an inevitable part of leadership.
