The Police Command in Cross River has apprehended a 32-year old man, Akan Constant, over suspected threat to kill his neighbour with a locally made firearm in Alok Community, Ikom Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Sunday Eitokpah, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Calabar.

Eitokpah said that the suspect was apprehended following timely information provided by a community leader on Oct. 26.

He said that Constant was alleged to have brought out a firearm during a disagreement with his neighbour and threatened to kill him.

The police spokesperson said that the suspect reportedly fled with the firearm when confronted by neighbours and passersby.

He said that operatives from the Ikom Police Division promptly mobilised to the community, apprehended the suspect, and recovered a locally made firearm and two live cartridges.

“The suspect is currently in police custody, while the recovered firearm and ammunition have been registered as exhibits.

“Investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate legal action,” he said.

The PPRO stated that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ajo Ordue, had zero tolerance for crime and violence, and was committed to ridding the state of criminalities.

He said that the commissioner had commended the community leadership for its timely cooperation with the police on the matter.

“The commissioner has always maintained that effective policing depends on mutual trust, partnership, and the willingness of residents to provide credible information.

“So community participation remains vital to preventing crime, identifying security threats, and ensuring prompt police response,” he said.

The police image maker urged residents to embrace peaceful means of resolving disputes, and continue to support the police with timely and credible information.

Eitokpah urged members of the public to report emergencies and suspicious activities through dedicated control room numbers.
