Police declare man, partner wanted following custody escape

The Nigeria Police Force has launched a public appeal for information leading to the arrest of Akinloye Oluwasegun Akande and his partner, Ayoade Awoniyi, following their escape from police custody.

Akande, whose last known address is No. 25 Durojaiye Crescent, Otun Akute, Ogun State, is being sought in connection with alleged violations of Nigerian laws regarding same-sex relationships.

The investigation began on April 12, 2024, after hotel staff in Lagos reportedly discovered Akande and Awoniyi in a compromising situation and alerted the authorities.

The suspects were subsequently taken into custody but managed to escape on April 16, 2024. Following their flight, a court order was issued declaring both men wanted for prosecution.

Under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act and existing provisions of the Criminal Code, same-sex amorous relationships and carnal knowledge against the order of nature are serious offenses in Nigeria, carrying penalties of up to 14 years' imprisonment.

Police sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that local security vigilantes and the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) have been formally notified to assist in the manhunt across the country.

The Nigeria Police Force urges anyone with useful information regarding the whereabouts of Akande and Awoniyi to report immediately to the nearest police station.
