Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has embarked on a spiritual pilgrimage to Rome, seeking divine intervention for Nigeria amid political, social, and economic challenges.
Obi, alongside his wife, visited the four major Papal Basilicas in Rome – St. Mary Major, St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. John Lateran, and St. Peter’s Basilica – where he offered prayers for national unity, peace, and responsible leadership.
In a statement shared via X.com, the Anambra-born politician called on Nigerians to remain steadfast despite ongoing hardships. He described the pilgrimage as a personal appeal to God to bless the nation with leaders of competence, character, and commitment to the public good.
“Faith does not absolve us of responsibility; rather, it calls us to action. As Nigerians, we must each continue to do our part – with honesty, diligence, and love – for the healing and progress of our country,” Obi said.
During the visit, Obi and his wife passed through the Holy Doors at the basilicas, including the Scala Sancta the Holy Steps that Jesus ascended before Pontius Pilate engaging in prayer and reflection. They were also granted an audience with Pope Leo XIV, where they humbly appealed for divine guidance and blessings for Nigeria.
Obi emphasised that while prayer is powerful, Nigerians must remain active participants in the nation’s development, contributing to a vision of a renewed and better country.
