The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dennis Otuaro, has described Democracy Day as an important moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a symbol of national unity.

In a statement marking the occasion, Otuaro said June 12 represents the country’s struggle for free and fair elections and accountable leadership.

He paid tribute to the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola and other pro-democracy figures, saying their sacrifices helped restore democratic rule in Nigeria.

Otuaro commended President Bola Tinubu for strengthening democratic institutions and supporting development in the Niger Delta region.

He said the Niger Delta is benefiting from democracy through increased government attention and development projects.

According to him, over 8,235 students are currently benefiting from scholarship programmes under the Presidential Amnesty Programme, both in Nigeria and abroad.

He also listed key federal projects in the region, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the South-South Development Commission, the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoniland, and the Nigeria Maritime University in Okerenkoko.

Otuaro said these projects show government commitment to improving development in the Niger Delta.

He called on youths and former militants in the region to remain peaceful and support ongoing efforts to maintain stability.

He also urged residents to avoid misinformation and political manipulation.

Otuaro appealed for continued support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, saying it would help sustain peace and development in the region.

He added that the President had shown strong commitment to resolving long-standing issues, including the Warri Federal Constituency ward delineation dispute.
