…Blames extensive damage on national planning failure
The Niger State Government has confirmed that more than 700 people remain unaccounted for following the catastrophic flooding that recently struck Mokwa Community in Mokwa Local Government Area.
Governor Umaru Bago disclosed the figures on Tuesday during a condolence visit by former Chief Security Officer to the late Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, and his delegation in Minna. The governor was represented by his deputy, Mr Yakubu Garba.
Bago revealed that at least 207 individuals have been confirmed dead, while over 3,000 households have been displaced by the disaster. He described the Mokwa flood as a national tragedy, noting that the destruction was on an unprecedented scale.
According to him, the flooding affected around 400 houses, with more than 283 homes and 50 shops entirely swept away.
The governor stated that the state government is collaborating with professional agencies to identify the root causes of the disaster. He added that a detailed assessment is being awaited to guide the government’s next course of action.
Bago also expressed appreciation to individuals and corporate bodies that have provided humanitarian aid and donations, stating that such gestures remain vital to the ongoing relief and recovery efforts.
In his remarks, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha said the purpose of the delegation’s visit was to express heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Niger State. He said the scale of devastation in Mokwa warrants nationwide attention and solidarity.
Al-Mustapha explained that the delegation comprises concerned citizens from different parts of the country, all committed to supporting flood victims and helping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
He said the group plans to engage with traditional leaders in Mokwa, particularly the council chairman, to explore localised approaches that could reinforce community resilience against flooding.
Al-Mustapha added that the team is also keen on working with the state government to promote sustainable urban planning and better living conditions as long-term preventative measures.
It was also learnt that Al-Mustapha and his entourage paid a courtesy call on former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd), as part of their visit to Niger State.
