Airtel Africa, a leading provider of telecommunications and mobile money services across 14 African countries, has today published its 2025 Sustainability Report, outlining notable progress in digital access, financial inclusion, and environmental initiatives.
The report reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to its core mission of transforming lives through greater access to digital services, supporting inclusive economic development, and advancing environmental responsibility across its operations.
During the 2024/25 fiscal year, Airtel Africa recorded meaningful gains in bridging the digital divide, enhancing financial accessibility, and empowering underserved communities. These milestones were achieved through strategic investments in infrastructure, workforce development, and sustainable business practices.
Commenting on the report, Sunil Taldar, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, said, “This year’s achievements, from connecting 2,176 schools through our UNICEF partnership to reaching 44.6 million Airtel Money customers with near gender parity, demonstrate the transformative potential of technology. At Airtel Africa, we are not only expanding networks but also creating pathways to education, financial empowerment, and sustainable development for Africa’s next generation.”
Key Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Updates: “Airtel Africa increased population coverage to 81.2% across its 14 markets, up from 80.4% the previous year. The company now operates 36,159 4G sites, with more than 15,300 located in rural areas. A continued $670 million investment in network expansion improved speed, capacity, and access to voice, data, and mobile money services.
“The number of data users rose to 73.4 million, a 14.1% increase from 2023/24. Airtel Money customer base reached 44.6 million, up 17.3%. Of these, 44.2% are women, up from 38%, reflecting meaningful steps toward gender parity. The Airtel Money agent network grew to 1.7 million agents, an increase of 23.4%, boosting reach and accessibility.
“Through its partnership with UNICEF, Airtel Africa connected 2,176 schools to free internet services, a significant rise from 1,201 schools the previous year. This initiative is designed to unlock the potential of young people by improving access to digital learning.
“Women now represent 29.2% of Airtel Africa’s total workforce, up from 28.3%, reinforcing the company’s effort to promote inclusivity in its internal operations.
“The company transitioned 500 off-grid sites to on-grid power, reducing its reliance on diesel generators. Furthermore, 93% of all waste generated was recycled, an improvement from 90% in the previous year. These developments reflect Airtel Africa’s commitment to environmental stewardship through responsible energy and waste management.”
The 2025 Sustainability Report was prepared in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and GSMA industry standards for telecommunications.
