The Osun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the indefinite postponement of its 2026 governorship primary election, originally scheduled for Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
The suspension is attributed to unresolved and widening conflicts within the party’s national leadership, which have disrupted the conduct of congresses and the election of delegates.
Speaking in Osogbo, the State Party Chairman, Sunday Bisi, confirmed the development.
He noted that Governor Ademola Adeleke, the sole aspirant for the ticket, had already completed all necessary procedures, including the submission of nomination forms and securing clearance from the Screening Committee.
However, Bisi explained that the leadership crisis at the national level, which has spawned multiple court cases, led to the suspension of key officials responsible for overseeing the local congresses.
Without these officials, the party has been unable to constitute the delegate structure required to ratify the Governor’s candidacy.
The stalemate has raised serious concerns regarding the Governor’s path forward. Despite being the only cleared aspirant, fears are mounting that if a resolution recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is not reached within the statutory timeframe, Adeleke’s re-election bid on the PDP platform could be jeopardized.
Information reaching NewsDirect is that the Governor is actively exploring participating in the elections on alternative party platforms pending the resolution of the PDP leadership conflict.
A source said, “The Governor is considering Alliance for Democracy or Aregbe’s ADC. We are all waiting to hear from the leaders on the next course of action.”
Amidst the uncertainty, the Osun PDP Chairman assured party members and the general public that intensive efforts are underway to secure a lawful and timely resolution.
He reiterated the PDP’s commitment to transparency and full compliance with electoral guidelines, urging supporters to remain calm as the party navigates the legal logjam.
