Osun Assembly passes Islamic, traditional marriages bill

The Osun State House of Assembly has passed the Osun State Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill, 2025.
The passage on Monday followed the consideration of the House Committee reports and clause-by-clause adoption during plenary, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, at the Assembly Complex, Osogbo .
The Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill, sponsored by Hon. Lawal Bamidele Rasheed sought to provide a clear legal framework for the recognition, documentation, and protection of marriages conducted under Islamic and traditional rites in Osun State.
The assembly speaker, Rt. Hon. Egbedun said, “this legislation respects our cultural and religious values while ensuring that all marriages within Osun State are duly recognised and protected under the law.”
Other legislation was, an Executive Bill the Osun State Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill, establishes a legal and institutional framework for the formation and management of Water Users’ Associations (WUAs) to oversee irrigation systems across the state.
The law aims to empower farmers and rural communities to manage irrigation infrastructure sustainably, improve water distribution efficiency, and enhance crop yield and food security.
According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, “The clean copies of the bills will be produced and transmitted to the Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, for his assent.
“Once signed into law, they will mark significant milestones in advancing social justice, cultural preservation, and economic growth in Osun State” he added.
