A renewed violent clash between farmers and Fulani pastoralists in Jigawa State has left one person dead and several others injured, including a police officer.
The latest incident occurred in Yelwan Musari village, Guri Local Government Area, between Saturday and Sunday morning. It comes just days after a similar confrontation in Taura Local Government Area left 12 people injured earlier in the week.
Residents identified the deceased as Magaji Mai’aya, a local farmer.
According to a witness, Ado Musa, armed herders attacked the village, setting fire to residential houses and local rice milling factories.
He noted that the assailants also blocked the Guri-Hadejia highway, frustrating efforts to rush injured victims to the Hadejia General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
”Police and soldiers arrived at the scene late but could not prevent the escalation, as both groups had been violent since Saturday afternoon,” Musa stated.
The conflict reportedly stems from months of mounting tension following the killing of another farmer, Ya’u Namara, by herders last year. Although local authorities had attempted to broker peace between the warring communities, those efforts appear to have failed.
Adamu Ori, a leader in the herders’ community, could not be reached for comment on the incident.
This attack follows a violent clash on Tuesday in Zarga village, Taura Local Government Area, where 12 farmers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Jigawa State Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, could not be immediately reached for an official statement.
Guri and several other council areas in the Jigawa North-East senatorial district are known for their fertile land, making them frequent flashpoints for disputes over farming and grazing rights.
