…Warns critics against twisting issue for political gain
Edo State Governor, Mr Monday Okpebholo, has defended his controversial comments insisting that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, must seek his consent before visiting the state.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Fred Itua, on Sunday, the governor described the directive as a necessary security protocol rather than a political manoeuvre.
“As Chief Security Officer of Edo State, I am constitutionally responsible for safeguarding lives and property. High-profile visits demand advance notice to ensure adequate security measures are in place,” the statement read.
Governor Okpebholo said the policy was introduced due to rising incidents of kidnappings and attacks on clergy, adding that ignoring security protocols exposes both visitors and residents to avoidable danger.
“We expect leaders, no matter how highly placed, to align with the protocols and security realities of the areas they visit,” he added.
Okpebholo stressed that his administration respected Mr Obi and other political figures contributing to Nigeria’s democracy but maintained that “respect for official procedure must remain a constant.”
The statement warned critics against exploiting the issue for political mileage, describing such attempts as irresponsible.
