Ogun, REA partner Renew Power to build 500MW solar manufacturing plant
The Ogun State Government has finalized a major partnership aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s transition to clean energy, announcing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of a 500-Megawatt (MW) Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Manufacturing Plant.
The state government, represented by Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, entered the tripartite agreement with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Renew Power Limited on Tuesday.
The project is specifically designed to boost local production capacity for renewable energy components.
In a statement following the signing, Governor Abiodun described the partnership as a decisive step toward achieving a sustainable energy future for the state.
He emphasized that the landmark initiative will serve multiple economic goals.
"This partnership aims to develop a 500MW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Manufacturing Plant in Ogun State, a landmark initiative that will not only promote energy access and strengthen our industrial capacity but also accelerate Nigeria’s energy transition agenda," Governor Abiodun stated.
The Governor highlighted his administration's vision to position Ogun State as a dominant player in the clean energy space, making it a key hub in Africa’s renewable energy ecosystem.
The manufacturing facility is expected to drive economic diversification and create substantial job opportunities within the state. By expanding local capacity for clean energy production, the project will reduce dependence on imported components and lay a foundation for inclusive industrial growth, in line with the state’s developmental objectives.
Governor Abiodun extended appreciation to the REA and Renew Power Limited for their collaboration, noting their shared commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and clean energy for the people of Ogun State.
The project aligns with broader Federal Government efforts, spearheaded by agencies like the REA, to attract investments into renewable energy manufacturing and scale up electrification in underserved communities across Nigeria.
