NUPRC pledges to boost decarbonisation efforts

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has reaffirmed its commitment to driving decarbonisation in the country’s oil and gas sector through a strategic partnership with the World Bank Group and other multilateral organisations.

The collaboration aims to enhance the capacity of industry operators in methane abatement and emissions management as part of Nigeria’s broader upstream decarbonisation agenda.

The renewed pledge was made during a three-day Measurement, Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MMRV) Capacity Building Programme organised by the NUPRC in partnership with the World Bank Group.

The workshop brought together more than 70 participants from across the upstream petroleum industry, including International Oil Companies, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), indigenous operators, and independent producers.

According to the Commission, the programme was designed to strengthen Nigeria’s technical and regulatory capabilities for effective emissions monitoring and management within the upstream sector.

Speaking on behalf of the Commission Chief Executive, the Executive Commissioner, Development and Production, Engr. Enorense Amadasu, noted that methane emissions make up a significant portion of Nigeria’s greenhouse gas output from upstream activities largely from flaring, venting, and fugitive sources.

In his remarks, the Director of Energy Sustainability and Carbon Management at the NUPRC, Engr. Joseph O. Ogunsola, reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to aligning Nigeria’s petroleum operations with global standards on emissions reduction and carbon monetisation.

He stressed that the collaboration with the World Bank marks a critical step in positioning Nigeria’s upstream sector as a responsible and sustainable contributor to the global energy transition.
