Ogun: Police raise alarm over rising drowning incidents across state

The Ogun State Police Command has raised the alarm over a recent surge in drowning incidents across the state, warning residents and operators of recreational facilities to take urgent safety precautions.

This was contained in a public advisory issued by the Command and signed by DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command.

In the advisory, the police cautioned members of the public to exercise restraint and vigilance around water bodies, urging residents to avoid risky swimming activities in rivers, streams and pools.

“The Ogun Police Command warns the public of a recent rise in drowning incidents across the State,” the statement reads, stressing that avoidable loss of life is unacceptable.

The Command placed particular responsibility on hotels and recreational centres, directing operators to ensure strict supervision of swimming pools and compliance with safety standards.

“Hotel and recreational facility operators must ensure that all swimming pools are properly supervised, clearly marked, and have trained lifeguards on duty at all times,” the statement added.

The police further emphasised the need for readily available safety equipment at such facilities to enable swift response during emergencies.

According to the Command, drowning incidents can be prevented if individuals and stakeholders act responsibly and prioritise safety.

The Commissioner of Police, through the advisory, called on residents to take personal responsibility while urging facility owners to uphold safety obligations to protect lives across Ogun State.
