…Pays tribute at 3-day prayer hindered him

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has clarified his absence at the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, attributing it to the closure of Katsina Airport due to the high volume of visiting dignitaries.

Obi, however, travelled to Daura on Wednesday to join the late president’s family and other sympathisers for the continuation of the three-day prayer rites. During the visit, he extended his condolences and described Buhari as “a leader who cared about the poor.”

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Obi explained that logistical challenges and restricted access to Katsina’s airspace prevented him from attending the earlier ceremonies.

“Yes, it was difficult to come here yesterday because there were no flights. Even if you have a flight, you can’t land at Katsina Airport. It was all closed because there were a lot of dignitaries,” he said.

His absence from the funeral service sparked debate on social media, with critics questioning the implications for political unity, given Obi’s status as a leading opposition figure and former presidential contender.

In response, Obi dismissed any suggestion of disrespect, noting that participation in the mourning process remained meaningful at any stage.

“The mourning continues to tomorrow. So, whoever comes tomorrow is still part of the mourning,” he remarked.

Recalling a personal interaction with Buhari during the 2023 campaign period, Obi praised the late president’s concern for the poor.

“I had the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning, and I remember his words to this day: ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ That’s what I always remember. And I believe he did his best within his capacity,” he said.

He encouraged current and future leaders to draw inspiration from Buhari’s humility and dedication, stating that leadership should be anchored in service and compassion.

“We have to all learn how to serve our country knowing that one day we will all be called back by our creator,” Obi added.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away in London on Sunday and was buried in Daura, Katsina State, with full military honours. The ceremony was attended by President Bola Tinubu, senior government officials, foreign diplomats, and traditional leaders.
