OAU final year Student allegedly commits suicide

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has expressed grief over the death of Oluwole Oluwaseun, a final-year student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

The university stated that it received information about an emergency involving the student at an apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife, at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team immediately proceeded to the location upon receiving the report.

He noted that school authorities promptly contacted the Nigeria Police, and officers from the ‘A’ Division in Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the university’s security personnel at the scene.

“The student was subsequently conveyed to the University Health Centre, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.”

“The university is deeply concerned by the circumstances surrounding the death and has handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police for further investigation. The university has also notified the appropriate student affairs authorities for necessary follow-up, particularly with respect to the welfare and support of students affected by the incident,” Olarewaju stated.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, extended the heartfelt condolences of the university management to the family, friends, classmates, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time. He also expressed concern for students and members of the university community who may be emotionally affected by the tragedy.

OAU urged members of the university community to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information or speculations concerning the circumstances of the death while investigations are ongoing.

The university further encouraged any student experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures, or other personal challenges to seek help promptly from trusted persons and appropriate university support structures.

Reaffirming his commitment to the welfare of staff and students, the Vice-Chancellor added that no student should feel they have to confront overwhelming difficulties alone.

The management assured the university community that appropriate authorities are handling the matter and that further information will be communicated through official channels when necessary
