NPF unveils CNG buses to slash fuel costs

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken a major step toward modernising its operations with the adoption of green energy vehicles, following the donation of three specialised buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).
The vehicles were officially handed over on April 21, 2026, by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund in collaboration with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles. The move marks the beginning of a broader transition to environmentally friendly policing.
Speaking at the event, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammad Sheidu, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of policing, noting that it will enhance operational efficiency while reducing the Force’s dependence on petrol and diesel.
Also speaking, Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles, Ismail Ahmed, said the deployment of the buses represents only the first phase of a long-term plan. He disclosed that arrangements are underway to convert existing police vehicles to run on CNG, a move expected to significantly cut fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions.
According to him, the initiative will also include capacity building and technical training to ensure sustainability, as well as the establishment of conversion centres to support maintenance and expansion.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed appreciation to both organisations for their support, describing the development as timely and aligned with global best practices. He noted that the transition to alternative energy is not only cost-effective but also critical to improving logistics and operational readiness within the Force. He added that the newly acquired buses would be deployed to enhance personnel mobility and welfare.
He further assured that the Police would maximise the benefits of the partnership by developing internal capacity to manage and maintain its evolving fleet.
The event featured the formal handover of keys and inspection of the vehicles by top officials, including senior representatives from both partner organisations.
The collaboration highlights a growing commitment by stakeholders to reposition the Nigeria Police Force with modern, sustainable, and cost-efficient tools, as the country gradually embraces cleaner energy solutions.
However, industry observers say the initiative could set a precedent for other government agencies seeking to reduce operational costs and align with global environmental standards.
