The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has launched Revision 2 of the Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code as part of efforts to strengthen its domestic gas market.
The revised framework, unveiled on October 26, 2026, at the 20th edition of OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week in Lagos, is designed to improve the transportation of natural gas across the country, promote transparency, encourage investment and facilitate trade within the energy sector.
Speaking, NMDPRA’s Chief Executive, Mr Rabiu Abdullahi Umar explained that the revised code provides clearer rules for gas measurement, pipeline capacity booking, gas nominations and transportation.
He noted that the guidelines are expected to improve coordination among industry operators and ensure fair and transparent access to shared gas pipeline infrastructure.
He explained further that the Gas Transportation Network Code serves as a rulebook for companies that use Nigeria’s gas pipelines.
“It establishes how gas producers, transporters and buyers can access pipeline facilities, measure the volume of gas supplied and coordinate its movement to different destinations.”
“This is particularly important because gas is not only a source of energy for electricity generation but also a major input for industries such as fertiliser production, manufacturing and transportation,” he said.
The revision also builds on improvements recorded under the earlier framework.
According to Umar, the number of companies participating in the gas transportation network has increased since Revision 1 was introduced, while operational imbalances on the Western Network declined by approximately 30 per cent in the first half of 2026.
