NITDA urges Nigerians to practice ‘cyber hygiene’ for a safer digital future
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has called on Nigerians to take greater responsibility for their online safety as the country joins the rest of the world to commemorate the National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2025.
This was contained in a statement signed by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, fnipr, f.apra, mcipr, Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, on Monday, in which the Agency warned that increasing digital connectivity has also heightened the risks of cybercrime and online fraud.
The statement reads partly: “As the world becomes increasingly digital, our daily lives are now more connected than ever, through our phones, computers, and the internet we use every day. But with this growing connection comes a growing risk: hackers, scams, and cyber threats waiting for just one careless click.
“The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is using this Cybersecurity Awareness Month to remind Nigerians that cyber safety begins with individual responsibility. Everyone has the power to protect themselves and their communities by adopting simple but effective cyber hygiene practices.
“The theme for this year, ‘Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow,’ emphasises that cyber hygiene is not only a personal responsibility but a collective effort. When individuals protect themselves, they also safeguard their families, workplaces, and the broader digital community.
“As we continue to build a secure and digitally resilient Nigeria, NITDA calls on all citizens to stay alert, click wisely, and stay safe online.”
NITDA said the month-long observance of Cyber Security Awareness Month offers an opportunity for individuals, organisations, and institutions to reflect on the importance of safe online behaviour in a fast-evolving digital environment.
The Agency stressed that adopting responsible cyber habits is now a matter of national importance, given the growing rate of internet penetration and the increasing number of Nigerians engaging in digital transactions daily.
According to the statement, the call to action is aimed at helping Nigerians become more conscious of how they share information, manage passwords, and engage with digital platforms. It added that the Agency’s campaign aligns with Nigeria’s broader goal of building a digitally resilient economy capable of withstanding cyber threats and fostering trust in the digital space.
NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cybersecurity awareness, building citizens’ digital literacy, and promoting a culture of shared responsibility in the fight against online risks.
It also assured that the Federal Government, through the Agency, would continue to invest in frameworks, partnerships, and awareness programmes designed to ensure Nigerians can navigate the digital world safely and confidently.
