The 10th National Assembly under Senate President Godswill Akpabio has passed over 90 bills within two years, with 52 already signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking one of the most productive legislative sessions in Nigeria’s recent history.
Akpabio’s Media Consultant, Mr Kenny Okolugbo, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja, describing the record as “unprecedented” and crediting it to Akpabio’s “distinctive and results-oriented leadership style” that has positioned the Senate as a driver of economic reform and good governance.
According to Okolugbo, the Senate has been instrumental in recalibrating fiscal policy, boosting investor confidence, and promoting inclusive governance through impactful legislation.
He cited landmark reforms such as the Student Loan Act, which provides interest free education loans repayable after employment; the Tax Reform Bill, which broadens the tax base while protecting low income earners; and the Minimum Wage Act, which doubled workers’ pay and exempted minimum wage earners from income tax.
Other notable legislative interventions include laws establishing Regional Development Commissions for all six geopolitical zones, as well as revisions to the Electricity Act to curb arbitrary tariff hikes and enhance regulatory transparency.
Okolugbo added that inflation has dropped to 20.12%, reflecting a 4.23% decline in recent months a trend he attributed partly to the Senate’s stabilisation policies.
“The Senate has demonstrated that progress is possible through focused and accountable leadership. We may not have arrived, but the signs are promising,” he said.
He also praised Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin for ensuring legislative stability in Akpabio’s absence and reaffirmed that the Senate’s success should be judged by its results for Nigerians, not its relationship with the Executive.
“Akpabio’s leadership continues to reflect his trademark drive and ambition the same that transformed Akwa Ibom during his tenure as governor,” Okolugbo stated.
