A nine-year-old girl, Miss Atunwa Folasayo Precious, has died from injuries she sustained during an attack allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani herders on Agojeju-Odo community in Kogi State.
According to family members and community sources, the incident occurred on April 4, 2024, when armed attackers reportedly invaded the community, leaving several residents injured and properties disrupted.
Among those affected were Miss Folasayo, her father, Mr. Atunwa Olawale Adeola, her mother, and two other children, who reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack.
The young girl suffered a severe head injury and was initially rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of her condition, she was later referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, for specialised medical care.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life, Folasayo succumbed to her injuries on April 5, 2024, barely a day after the attack.
She was nine years old.
The tragic death has drawn sympathy from residents and community leaders, who described the incident as heartbreaking and a painful reminder of the security challenges facing many rural communities.
Family members expressed grief over the loss of the young girl, recalling her as a cheerful child whose life was cut short by violence.
The attack has also renewed calls for strengthened security measures and greater protection for vulnerable communities affected by recurring violent incidents.
Residents urged relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Community leaders further appealed to government and security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The death of Miss Folasayo adds to concerns over the humanitarian impact of violent attacks on rural communities, particularly on women and children who often bear the brunt of such incidents.
