Nigeria faces shortage of 480,000 data protection professionals - NDPC

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has revealed that the country currently faces a significant deficit of approximately 480,000 Data Protection Officers (DPOs), despite achieving considerable growth in the sector over the last three years.

Speaking at the commencement of a week-long certification program for the second cohort of DPOs in Abuja on Monday, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, noted that while the number of certified professionals has risen from under 1,000 to over 10,000, the demand continues to far outpace the current supply.

This persistent talent gap is attributed to the rapid increase in the number of data controllers and processors across the country.

Dr. Olatunji explained that the commission has identified more than 500,000 entities that require dedicated DPOs to ensure compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act.

With only 10,000 qualified experts currently operating in this space, the commission is intensifying its training initiatives to position Nigeria as a premier African hub for globally competitive privacy professionals.

Beyond regulatory compliance, the NDPC boss highlighted the role of the certification program in fostering job creation within the digital economy, aligned with the Federal Government’s broader development priorities.

Head of Research and Development at the commission, Dr. Tolu Fadipe further underscored that responsible data management serves as the bedrock for emerging technologies and digital systems.

She maintained that the training is essential for building the technical competence required to navigate a data-centric world.

The curriculum, led by cybersecurity consultant Adeola Sopade, transitions participants from foundational principles to the practical application of data subject rights and legal compliance.

By exposing trainees to international best practices, the program aims to equip Nigerian youths with the specialized skills needed to manage the complexities of artificial intelligence and other technological advancements. Upon completion of the training, participants will be integrated into various organizations through internships, providing a direct pathway to employment and strengthening Nigeria's overall digital readiness.
