On the occasion of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, called on Nigerians to remain hopeful, insisting that the country can still achieve greatness despite decades of leadership failures.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Obi described Independence Day as a moment to celebrate the sacrifices of Nigeria’s heroes and to thank Almighty God for the nation’s blessings.

He recalled that on 1 October 1960, Nigeria gained independence with global acclaim and was hailed as a potential African superpower, with Time magazine projecting it as a leading force on the continent.

Obi lamented that “tragic failures of leadership derailed this vision,” but noted that Nigeria has consistently demonstrated resilience.

He emphasised that the founding fathers fought with confidence, passion, and determination to build a prosperous nation capable of standing alongside the world’s most advanced countries.

Obi said:“The story of Nigeria has been one of immense potential, interrupted by poor governance.

“Yet, the dreams of our founding fathers remain alive. With unity, accountability, and purposeful leadership, a great Nigeria is still possible.”

The former presidential candidate used the occasion to urge Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey, learn from past mistakes, and actively participate in nation-building to secure a brighter future.
