Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace and stability in Sudan while advancing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries.
The assurance was given by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, during a courtesy visit by the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Abdelaal, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

Ambassador Ahmed emphasized that Nigeria and Sudan share longstanding historical and cultural ties shaped by centuries of migration and cooperation. He noted that both nations remain aligned on key issues of regional peace and development, reiterating Nigeria’s support for the peaceful resolution of conflicts. He added that stability in Sudan is critical for broader security across Africa.
In his remarks, Ambassador Abdelaal highlighted the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations, including the integration of people of Nigerian origin within Sudanese society. He also briefed Nigerian officials on recent developments in Sudan, particularly recovery efforts in conflict-affected regions.
While acknowledging progress in restoring stability in some areas, the Sudanese envoy raised concerns over continued external interference, warning that it could prolong the crisis and undermine regional security.
Both parties emphasized the need for dialogue and negotiation as the primary pathway to resolving the conflict, noting that the situation in Sudan carries wider implications for peace across the continent, especially in the Sahel region. Ambassador Ahmed further reaffirmed Nigeria’s active engagement within the African Union and the international community in advocating for sustainable peace.
The meeting also explored avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation, including plans to convene the Nigeria–Sudan Political Consultations Committee to address shared interests and deepen diplomatic engagement.
