The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has called for restraint after a viral video emerged showing a group of Ghanaians protesting and demanding the deportation of Nigerians.
The demonstrators reportedly accused some Nigerians of misconduct and pressed for their removal from the country.
Responding to the incident, NIDCOM Chairman/CEO Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa denounced the blanket criminal stereotyping of Nigerians in Ghana. She stressed that while a few individuals may run afoul of the law, the vast majority of Nigerians abroad are law-abiding and contribute meaningfully to their host communities.
“Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
She appealed to Nigerians living in Ghana to remain peaceful and avoid provocation, assuring them that the matter is being handled through official diplomatic channels. Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, is engaging with Ghanaian authorities to de-escalate tensions and safeguard Nigerian interests.
The NIDCOM chief also warned against the spread of false information, urging the public to dismiss unverified claims and videos alleging the destruction of Nigerian-owned properties in Ghana.
“There is no verified evidence of attacks or destruction of Nigerian properties. We must prevent unnecessary panic and avoid retaliatory actions,” she cautioned.
Dabiri-Erewa commended the Ghanaian and Nigerian High Commissions for their joint efforts in managing the situation, noting that diplomatic steps are underway to preserve peace and the longstanding cordial relations between both countries.
She further appealed for moderation in public commentary, encouraging citizens of both nations to avoid inflammatory remarks that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
