The Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated Commander Matuwo I. Olufokunbi of the United States Navy on his historic achievements, describing him as a source of pride for Nigerians worldwide.
Commander Olufokunbi, a Nigerian-American, has become the third Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy warship.
He is also the first Nigerian-American to earn qualification as a Nuclear Engineer through the highly selective U.S. Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program, marking a significant milestone in a demanding field.
In a statement issued on Monday by Gabriel Odu of NiDCOM’s Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit, Dabiri-Erewa praised Olufokunbi’s perseverance, discipline, and pioneering achievements. She said his success reflects the resilience, creativity, and competitive spirit of Nigerians globally.
“This accomplishment showcases the dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment that define the Nigerian ethos. Commander Olufokunbi’s success is proof that Nigerians in the diaspora continue to excel in all areas of endeavour,” Dabiri-Erewa affirmed.
She further emphasised the significance of excelling in one of the most challenging programmes within the U.S. military, noting that it underlines the high calibre of Nigerians on the international stage.
Dabiri-Erewa encouraged young Nigerians to draw inspiration from Olufokunbi’s journey, emphasising determination and integrity as essential to achieving excellence anywhere in the world.
She reiterated NiDCOM’s commitment to supporting and recognising the achievements of Nigerians abroad, whose successes enhance the nation’s global reputation.
