The Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Lami Adamu Bello has received a delegation from Access Bank Plc, led by Mr. Solomon Abiakalam, on a courtesy visit to discuss strategies for combating financial crime and strengthening efforts against human trafficking across West Africa.

The engagement focused on strengthening institutional cooperation, promoting financial transparency, and identifying practical strategies to disrupt the financial networks that facilitate human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable persons.

Discussions highlighted the links between financial crimes, including money laundering, fraudulent financial transactions, and illicit fund transfers, and human trafficking. Both parties emphasised the need for financial institutions and law enforcement agencies to adopt a coordinated approach to identifying suspicious transactions, tracing illicit financial flows and dismantling criminal networks.

The delegation noted that criminal networks often exploit financial systems to conceal proceeds of crime, finance trafficking operations and evade law enforcement. The meeting therefore underscored the importance of enhanced financial intelligence, information sharing and effective transaction monitoring in detecting and disrupting these activities.

The engagement also highlighted the need to complement public awareness campaigns with sustained, intelligence-driven collaboration between financial institutions and anti-trafficking agencies. Public education remains essential in helping citizens recognise fraudulent investment schemes, online scams, recruitment fraud and other financial practices that may be linked to trafficking operations.

The proposed collaboration presents an opportunity for financial institutions to contribute their expertise in tracking suspicious financial transactions, while NAPTIP applies its investigative and enforcement capabilities to identify perpetrators, protect victims and support the prosecution of offenders.

In her response, the Director-General appreciated the Access Bank delegation for the visit and expressed her support for the proposed collaboration, reaffirming the Agency’s readiness to partner with the bank in strengthening efforts to combat financial crime and human trafficking.

The engagement reinforced the importance of a coordinated, cross-sectoral approach to closing financial loopholes exploited by criminal networks and advancing collective efforts to combat human trafficking and related crimes across West Africa.
