A former senator and governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Iyabo Obasanjo, has declared that her political career and ambitions are built on personal merit rather than the influence of her father, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Speaking over the weekend at a Media Parliament organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, held at the NUJ Hall in Iwe-Iroyin, Abeokuta, Obasanjo emphasized her independent political journey and her longstanding connection with the people of the state.

She maintained that her track record in public service continues to speak in her favor, noting that her past contributions as a former Commissioner for Health and as a representative of Ogun Central in the National Assembly have earned her significant recognition and goodwill among her constituents.

Obasanjo also stressed that her consistent grassroots engagement and regular presence in Abeokuta have strengthened her political base. According to her, it is these efforts, not her family name, that have helped her gain acceptance and support across the state.

Addressing claims about leveraging her father’s influence, she argued that her career trajectory reflects a different reality. She pointed out that she worked her way up through the political ranks, including supporting other candidates, rather than relying on privileged access or family ties.

Reaffirming her ambition ahead of the 2027 governorship race, Obasanjo expressed total confidence in her qualifications. She stated that her extensive experience, past performance, and deep relationship with the people position her as a strong contender for the leadership of Ogun State.
